Summer Photography
Learning photography in the summer is the last in my initial series of seasonal reviews (see previous seasons: Spring, Winter, Autumn). These 4 posts form a base-line of my learning, so that I can compare the work that I’m doing in the future with that generated at the start of my 10,000 hour project and hopefully see some progress.
The past three months have seen a shift in focus for me away from landscapes, particularly rural, towards Street Photography and some pretty weird still life.

Club photo-walk
The Stoke Poges Photographic Club organised some photo walks during the summer period when it is officially closed. The first of these was to Eton where I sought out and shot the Anthony Gormley sculpture appearing to walk down the wall of the building, to the right.
Gormey has done a lot of cool stuff, which is distributed around the world; I feel lucky that this sculpture is on our doorstep, three stories up on a college building down one of the side streets.
Photographically, I have tried to give the impression that the wall is horizontal and an alien-like sculpture, having appeared from the void, is simply walking along a flat surface towards the viewer.
Art in the Canary Islands
In July we went to Lanzarote, primarily for health and sporting activities at Club La Santa, but also to take advantage of the art of the Island, mainly Ceasar Manrique, do a spot of seascape photography attempting to emulate Hiroshi Sugimoto, then went on a sunset photography course with Toni from which produced the image below.

Photo walk with Sean Tucker
8th July: InstaWalk with Sean Tucker which was an inspirational event. Somewhat surreal as he led 40-50 photography enthusiasts and YouTube followers through the streets of east London like the Pied Piper.
me: I like the diagonals and reflections. |

Street Photography course with Simon Ellingworth from Amersham Studios and the RPS
Having never previously been to Spitalfield’s Market or photographed the areas around Brick Lane, this was a revelation to me. Although arguably over exploited, the whole area is a goldmine for street photographers, particularly in the summer when everybody is looking at their best.
