This journal records my actual ten thousand hours mastering fine art photography through deliberate practice.
Hour 8,476 to 8,561
31st March 2024
Hours 8,559 to 8,561
(½h) updating this post
(1h) discovered the Belgian surrealist painters Paul Delvaux and Marcel Marien, respectively a contemporary and protégé of Magritte
(½h) creating a draft “Spring 2024” mainly to hold notes about the above artists
(1h) YouTube:
- RealmsBeyond: “Uncovering the Surreal Genius of Paul Delvaux“
- Best Documentary: “Wassily Kandinsky, the Master of Abstract Art“
30th March 2024
Hour 8,558
(1h) reading Desmond Morris’s “The Lives of the Surrealist” where in particular he defines five basic types of surrealism:
- Paradoxical surrealism: the realistic depiction of irrationally juxtaposed element, e.g., Magritte
- Atmospheric surrealism: realistic compositions but with a strange intensity and dreamlike quality, e.g., Paul Delvaux, 1944, “Sleeping Venus” right
- Metamorphic surrealism: recognisable elements that have been distorted in shape and/ or colour, sometimes to extremes where the elements become little more than symbolic hieroglyphs as in the work of Joan Miró
- Biomorphic surrealism: the artist creates new figures that cannot be traced to a specific source but are still organic, e.g. Tyves Tanguy
- Abstract surrealism: organic abstract shapes with sufficient differentiation to make them more than merely a visual pattern – Arshile Gorky
Key to the above distinctions is when the surrealist creativity occurs, i.e., the connection with the artist’s subconscious. In the first two categories the creative surrealism occurs with the idea for the painting; in the latter three the surrealism is at work during the actual painting process. Magritte apparently described the process of applying paint to canvas as the “boring part”, whereas Miro said he has no idea what is going to happen when he sat in front of his easel and nobody was surprised than him at the eventual outcome.
Notes about Magritte:
- he fell out with André Breton when the latter took offence at Magritte’s wife wearing a silver cross necklace to a dinner at his house and thereby inadvertently(?) insulting his anti-religious sentiments
- during WWII he made more money by forging work of Picasso, Max Ernst and other contemporaries – interesting thought, how would a gallery price a Picasso painted by Magritte?
- he was ridiculed by the surrealists for the commercial manner in which he produced paintings, i.e., painting to order, essentially previous works, to whatever size or colour the patron requested – hardly in line with the surrealists’ left-wing political aims
29th March 2024
Hours 8,556 to 8,557
(½h) YouTube from Anthony Morganti “The Orton Effect – Applied to portraits and Wedding Photos” – process as follows:
- copy background layer and convert to smart object and blur with Gaussian Blur c. 10 pixels
- dramatically increase the contrast with a clipped Levels adjustment layer which clips the blacks and brings the whites down to about the half way point
- reduce the opacity of this new layer to c. 20-25% – sometimes less
Sometimes apply selectively using a mask.
(½h) Anthony Morganti “Adamski Effect” – bluring the background behind the subject. Good tips on selecting the subject:
- use Photoshop’s “Select Subject for a first selection
- click on Select and Mask
- Refine Hair
- Decontaminate Colors – tick box
- make minor additions or deletions
Remember to remove the subject from the background and refilling will generative fill, before blurring

- Adjust

- my hands are a bit stiff, adding tension to the image
26th March 2024
Hours 8,547 to 8,549
