Showing Spaces as They are Used
My objective is to emphasise the energy and movement in a scene; beyond that which can be captured by a single exposure.
Shadows of people provide scale and a habitation without dominating the image. Removal of distracting detail whilst retaining the structure and the emotional intent of the image.
The Process …
Combine images of a single subject taken from a series of viewpoints at regular intervals along a single trajectory. In its simplest form this means: take a photo, take a step, take another photo, then another step in the same direction, repeat.
The above technique provides a sense of activity whilst, unlike motion blur which softens the image, retains a sharp sense of structure. The structure is amplified by the use of alternating blend modes as explained below.
Impact of Blend Modes
(Sorry, Techy Photoshop Stuff)
The Multiply blend mode affects the darker areas of the images being combined. The Screen mode does the reverse as shown in the following table.
….. | ….. | |||
Image 1 | Image 2 – transparent background
Multiply | Normal with 50% opacity | Screen
Alternating Blend Modes – “More Bite”
Three images with normal blend modes and decreasing opacity for equals impact | Same three images combined with alternating multiply and screen blend modes. More Bite! |

Pep Ventosa – pioneer of digital multiple-exposure photography, often combining a hundred or more images to create an impressionistic image.
Peter Stevens FRPS – gained a 2018 fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society with a panel using a similar technique to my approach here.
